Wood Warehouse in a Sawmill
Higher Capacity and Quicker Access thanks to Cantilever Racks
At the Slovenian company ŠVELC d.o.o., one of the largest sawmills in the region, cantilever racks from OHRA provide 50 percent more storage capacity in the wood warehouse. The three-aisle warehouse with a height of 5.7 meters is serviced by narrow-aisle forklift trucks enabling the stored material to be accessed quickly and safely.
The sawmill, located in Kokrica near Krnj, produces floorboards, planks and wood profiles in a wide variety of forms and lengths. Clients include building companies and carpenter’s workshops as well as private customers. At the end of 2011 ŠVELC erected a new warehouse in a 50 x 20 meter hall for the storage of its range of wood products. The goal was to increase storage capacity, improve processes and generally store the material under safer conditions.
To this end ŠVELC chose cantilever racks from OHRA. One reason for this decision was that the specialist for warehouse and rack systems, located close to Cologne in Germany, exclusively employs high quality hot-rolled steel. As a result the rack supports yield elastically in the event of impacts, while still retaining their high vertical load capacity. Furthermore, OHRA demonstrated flexibility in the realisation of the warehouse. For example, the base plate was calculated by OHRA while the assembly of the rack system was carried out by employees from ŠVELC.
The new, three-aisle warehouse with a height of 5.7 meters provides a total storage capacity of up to 1,000 cubic meters. The wooden goods are stored on four levels. The 1,200 millimetre long cantilever arms with a load bearing capacity of 1,250 kilograms are hung flexibly into the racks, thus yielding in the event of impacts with e.g. forklifts. The operation of the forklifts is also supported by guide rails on the racks, thus enabling ŠVELC to safely employ two Combilift 4-way forklifts.
Through the combination of OHRA cantilever racks with narrow-aisle forklifts ŠVELC has been able to both speed up access to the material and significantly reduce damage to the racks and the stored wood. Although the cantilever rack system has increased storage capacity by 50 percent, the new warehouse offers greater stock reliability and a significantly improved inventory management.
